Charlie Quigley was working with the Portsmouth Rugby Club, and at Portsmouth College’s Football Academy as Head of Sport Science when Ben Williams (head of strength and conditioning at Land Rover BAR) contacted one of Charlie’s former lecturers to see if she knew of anyone suitable for an internship with the team.
“My initial internship was for 3 months from May 2016 and so I helped out a little bit at the Portsmouth [America’s Cup World Series] event and some of the Land Rover BAR Academy testing days. I was working with the senior guys, predominantly, doing research projects on strength and conditioning support, it was a great experience to work with professional athletes at the top of their sport.
“Then when the team was gearing up to move to Bermuda, Ben Williams invited me back in for another conversation. It was great news as he offered me the role of strength and conditioning coach with the Land Rover BAR Academy as an intern from January through to end of June. I've been programming the training, and liaising and running all their testing and all their physical preparation in line for the Red Bull Youth America's Cup. It was great to see all the hard work pay off in June when the Land Rover BAR Academy went on to win the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup in Bermuda.”
Charlie has now been accepted on a strength and conditioning Master's from St Mary's University in London and will be working with the Portsmouth Tennis Academy, running their strength and conditioning programme.
