Gunwharf Quays is gearing up to host a live screening event from the 26th – 29th May to coincide with the first weekend’s racing of the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup. Portsmouth based British Challenger Land Rover BAR, conceived by four times Olympic gold medallist and 34th America's Cup winner Sir Ben Ainslie, will try and win back the oldest international sporting trophy and one that Britain has never won.
As part of their Land Rover BAR ‘Fan Zone’, visitors to the centre will be able to catch live sailing action screened on BT Sport from the America’s Cup in Bermuda.
The Fan Zone will be open from 10am on each of the days and visitors can experience the world of competitive sailing through virtual reality headsets and enjoy a simulator with interactive games that recreate the skill of maintaining ferocious speeds on the boat with intricate control. There will also be a giant screen and seating to enjoy the live racing and cheer on the British team as well as an opportunity to show your support by purchasing the official team merchandise.
Holding centre stage will be the Guinness World Record LEGO replica of the Land Rover BAR America’s Cup Class Catamaran. The model, comprising 186,500 LEGO bricks, shows the sophisticated engineering that goes into making the boats fly above the water at tremendous speeds.
Colin Wilding, General Manager at Gunwharf Quays, said: “The local community has been behind the home team throughout the series and we are delighted to welcome fans to the centre to support Land Rover BAR bring the cup home. The event will be a wonderful opportunity for the local community to come together and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere in our unique waterfront setting.”
Land Rover BAR have their sights firmly locked on the qualifying races as they prepare to launch their campaign to bring the cup home. These qualifiers will be broadcasted live for free via BT Sport at Gunwharf Quays on the 26th (20:00-22:00), 27th (18:00-20:00), 28th (18:00-20:00) and the 29th (18:00-20:00).
