The Land Rover BAR Academy head to Spain for the first time since competing in the Extreme Sailing Series with Act 4 taking place in Barcelona from 20th – 23rd July.
Matt Brushwood, 23, will officially join the Land Rover BAR Academy as Bowman / Float after his successful trial at Act 3 Extreme Sailing Series in Madeira. His role is primarily managing all the manoeuvres onboard the GC32 and making sure the timing of different tasks are completed at the right time on the water.
“It’s very exciting to be joining the Land Rover BAR Academy as I have been working hard over the last 5 months in the gym to reach my fitness targets. I have also been through on-water observations in the GC32 at the last Extreme Sailing Series event in Madeira.
“My background is big boat sailing with high level teams and I am currently sailing on the Fast 40 Invictus, Ker 40+ where we have won many national championships. I hope that the skills I have learnt from working with a bigger team, such as good communications onboard, will be transferable on the GC32.”
The Land Rover BAR Academy was set up to find and support talented young British sailors to find a pathway into the America’s Cup back in January 2016 and has seen many sailors through the programme. The biggest success being Neil Hunter who was promoted to the Land Rover BAR senior team for the 35th America’s Cup Qualifiers and Semi Final races in Bermuda.
The squad will see the return of Chris Taylor on helm and Sam Batten as Jib Trimmer, both of whom were part of the winning Red Bull Youth America’s Cup team in Bermuda. Rob Bunce and Adam Kay, who were also on the RBYAC squad will be joined by Oli Greber and Will Alloway who all competed in Madeira last month.
Rob Andrews, Land Rover BAR Project Lead commented “We enter Barcelona with the same squad that achieved second place in the Act 2 of the Extreme Sailing Series in Qingdao China ESS, plus a new addition in Matt Brushwood. Building on the Land Rover BAR Academy win in the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup, we would hope to repeat in Barcelona the sort of performance we had in China; winning races and challenging for the podium.”
Barcelona, the 1992 Olympic venue, fans can follow the racing remotely via the live blog from 15:00 – 18:00 UTC+2 on 20 and 21 July, and watch live on the official Facebook and YouTube channels from 15:00 – 18:00 UTC+2 on Saturday 22 and from 14:00 – 17:00 UTC+2 on Sunday 23 July.
